Twitter Jumps on TweetDeck for $40 Million

TwitterAccording to CNN, Twitter has dropped $40 million large to acquire TweetDeck. While CNN did not disclose the sources, they say it’s a mix of cash and stock. Of course, the real ouster was TechCrunch who spilled the beans earlier this month, but also cited that Bill Gross’ UberMedia first made the offer in the $25 to $30 million amount.

Most are speculating that this was a defensive move. And why not? What company wouldn’t want to control their own property. However, I’m a big fan of HootSuite for iPad.

Thoughts? What did Twitter have to gain or lose by controlling a third party app?
