There are a lot of iOS games in the Apple App Store. Very few offer the amount of thumb pounding excitement that Touchgrind BMX pumps out almost effortlessly.
Illusion Labs, the good people behind this game are the visionaries behind the popular and very addictive iOS skateboarding game Touchgrind, which in my opinion, is one of the first games to truly take advantage of all that the iPhone iOS platform has to offer.
So when I had a chance to take Touchgrind BMX for a spin I immediately strapped on the helmut, kneepads and prepared myself for what I was sure would be nothing less than pure thumb-induced adrenaline.
And indeed, it was and is. The amount of fun I’ve had playing Touchgrind BMX should probably be illegal. I think my fiance is getting a bit jealous.
But what makes games like this so addictive? I call it the two finger factor. One finger tapping games are fun… but the minute you bring in the second finger opens up a whole new world. No longer is the second finger jealous and your brain recognizes this and sends tinglies all down your body.
Now to the meat of the review. First, I’ll tell you that I used the iPhone app version on the iPad and expanded it by x2 and the graphics were still topnotch. And while this allowed for a bigger, better viewing experience, I was forced to use both of my pointer fingers, which actually improved my ability to spin, flip, 360, boomerang, etc.
The gameplay is absolutely superb and the amount of fun luckily doesn’t depend on your ability to execute insane thumb tricks on your bike. It only depends on your willingness to learn a few tricks, add them to your arsenal, practice them a bit and unleash them on the course.
You start off at The Docks, a gritty concrete playground that you’ll soon find has a lot of very well placed ramps, tubs, crates and cylinders to push your tricks to the limit. On each level, your goal is to score as much adrenaline points and complete as many challenges as possibly. As you do this, you’ll unlock other levels. Each level will require more and more points to unlock additional levels to keep practicing.
My only hint is to bust out a few smaller, easier tricks in the beginning to increase your points multiplier and then once you do that throw down on a few hard tricks to maximize their points. Also, you’ll get even more points if you do tricks upside down. It will take some getting used to, but you’ll have the hang of it in no time.
All-in-all, Touchgrind BMX is by far one of the most fun and intense action games on the iPhone and iPad. The gameplay is amazing, easy to pick up, but challenging enough to keep you playing for hours… and all for under $5.
